Social networking is passive. What that means is this, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him (or her) drink.
Passivity in social networking is a real killer because publishing great content does not guarantee that it will be read. And, like we’ve said for years, “Your content will either get read or get lost.”
So, to be successful what you need are followers. People who consume your content. To get them you do one thing first: you seek to gain influence among your target audience.
Now inform your audience what you’re doing, where they can consume it, and how to get there. Remember, you’re “selling” your content for something more valuable than money; people’s time.
To inform them, use:
- Your website
- E-mail marketing
- Public speaking
- Media releases (yes more than one)
- Clubs and organizations.
Yes, you use your social networking campaign to inform people about your social networking campaign.
