Why Ancient Rome failed is an interesting question with answers strangely reminiscent of today. Well, some of the reasons are:
- Inflation. they debased their currency with less and less gold.
- The Roman military was no longer what it had been. They moved into a defensive posture because they could no longer go out an conquer other lands.
- They made agreements with tribes, what we call barbarians, and then forgot to honor the agreement. After several years of being forgotten the tribes attacked to take what they had been offered. Speaking of barbarians, don’t think that they were unclutured louts. nothing could be further from the truth. They were smart, able, sophisticated.
- the Eastern Empire did try to help, but the West lost battles and was beyond help. So, the fall of the West ushered in the Middle Ages and Feudalism.
Attila’s Revenge takes place in the waning years of the Western Roman Empire. It’s a fantastic read for those of us who love and revere old Rome.
