When the Answer is Not Yes or No
As writers we may be thinking that every problem; every question; has a yes or
solution. Wrong! That’s just not so. There is the third solution: when the answer is
not yes or no. Black or white. Go or stay. There is always another way.
Let’s say you have two people in a story and one wants Chinese for dinner and the
wants Italian. The go back and forth and there is just no solution. What to do? Let each
have what they want. This tells the reader both characters are strong willed and don’t
easily give in to pressure from the other.
Will this always work? No, of course not, but it’s a good way to get unpredictable
things into your story that the reader has not likely seen before.
