A writing group can do wonders for your work. I speak from personal experience. There is no better way to polish your words to a lethal edge than the critique of a writer’s group. So, where do you find one? Start with a Meetup, look to your local library, of do an online search for groups in your area.
What? You Can’t find A Group? Start One Here’s How
- Look for a place to hold it. You will need a room in a public place with a table and chairs for six or eight people – to start.
- Ask if the there is a charge to use the facility. To find one you may use for free, contact your local library, or book stores.
- Schedule your first meeting and advertise it on Facebook, Patch.com, at nearby libraries, and with a PSA (Public Service Announcement) in your newspapers, radio, and television stations.
- You can either have your writers send their work to each other or to you so that you can resend it. For this, email works great.
- At the top of each piece ask the writers to include their name, title, and any background that readers will need to make sense of the work.
- Be prepared to run the meeting. Tell attendees that they can have their work critiqued, but that they can only say nice things about others work. No hateful comments or other remarks intended to be hurtful will not be welcome.
That will get you well started. Good luck.
