Artificial Intelligence is intelligence that exists on computers running in a data center. This technology enables machines, computers and other machines as well, to simulate human thought and cognitive capabilities like: comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity and autonomy.
AI can, today, write, make decisions based on a vast amount of data, create music, read medical diagnostic tests. As this is written writers and musicians and others are losing money and clients to AI. Butm and this is a big but, there is a dark side. An AI may lie to you. The technical term is hallucinate. You see, the AI is programmed and designed to give you an answer. And it will. Even if the answer is wrong or, worse, totally fiction including references.
Machine Learning
An excellent way to envision AI is a series of concepts that have emerged over 70 years or so.
- 1980s Machine Learning
- 2010s Deep Learning
- 2020s Generative AI (Gen AI)
You can see the progression. The progress will not stop as AI finds it way into weapons, self driving cars, teaching, medical diagnostics and more. A man who I knew years ago had technology that incorporated many medical tests into one diagnostic. This is perfect for AI. It would integrate your MRI, blood tests, x-rays, surgety, medications, everything into your treatment. It’s coming.
Problem Solving
This refers to an AIs ability to find a solution to a problem. Animals do this instinctively and so do we (no I am not comparing us to animals). We use trial and error and insight to solve problems every day based on our understanding the problem at hand. When we have no experience we use creative thinking. We’ve all done this. Insight helps you solve problems that offer similar circumstanced , but are not identical to what you’ve done before. This is also called experience. And why people with vast experience are so valuable.
Text and Images
Want text and images for an e-book, blog post, the online world? And don’t wnat to buy a image or deal with copyright infringement? No problem. Let an AI make it for you. No one owns the image or the text so there is not worries when you publish them.
So What Does This Mean To You?
All of us, or almost all of us, will be out of work as AI progresses. The rest of us will be out of work when AI marries advanced robotics and they (the robots) are controlled by an AI. They will do anything we humans can do.
Look For
Universal Basic Income to keep you fed and the bills paid. society will do this to keep you from burning it to the ground as people lose all hopes of ever working again. But until then keep using AI for its benefits. There’s little else any of us can do to affect the future.
